Well, I can't let everybody else do nice things without doing a little something myself.
Each year, the American Cancer Society raises money by hosting an event they call the "Relay For Life" in various cities around the country. The Relay For Life is a 24 hour (I think it's only 19 now) running/walking/whatever relay event where members of different teams get together and take turns going around a track. The object it to have at least one person from your team going around the track at all times. OK, actually, the object is to raise a whole lot of money.
So this year, my company Compaq is sponsoring a team at the Freehold Raceway relay on June 2, and I have signed up to be on the team with Barbara and maybe even Bruce and Audrey. As a team member, I am looking for sponsors.... you know... people to give me money. Also, if anyone is interested in being a part of the team that's great too. See below for more info about the relay.
The American Cancer Society is a great organization fighting a terrible disease, and your donation helps carry on the fight. Here are some donation options for those interested:
There are several ways you can donate money to help the cause. Whatever you do, please CONTACT ME and let me know exactly what you're doing. I need to hear from you if possible by May 20 and definitely by June 1.
Of course, the easiest way to give is just to make a donation. You can write a check made out to American Cancer Society and send it to me OR you can make it out to me OR you can give me cash. Checks made out to ACS are fully tax deductible. Checks and cash to me are not deductible but I will donate the money and have my company match it, so more money gets to the cause. It's up to you which option you prefer.
In an effort to help raise money, I am offering anyone who wants, a MOK Leisure Unlimited picture CD. What that is, is a CD of all the digital pictures taken from every MOK Leisure Unlimited event since we've been doing digital photography. This of course only goes back a few years, but it's still a lot of pictures. Also, there are some digital movies from this past years bus trip which are not even on the web site yet. I'm selling these CDs for $10.00 each, and the ENTIRE amount will go to ACS. The CD and postage are on me. If you want one of these, just send me an email and follow it up with a check.
Each year at the relay, there is a special ceremony where they honor people who have fought cancer and beat it, and also remember those who have succumb to the disease. It's called a luminary ceremony. It's a beautiful ceremony where they light a special candle bag for each person being honored or remembered. Each year there are thousands of these luminaries burning all over the track. It's a very powerful thing to see. Anyone who wants to can purchase a luminary for $5.00 to honor a particular person. The names of all the luminaries are also read out loud during the ceremony. If you want to purchase one of these, let me know, send me the $5.00, and let me know who it's in honor of.
We're always looking for more people to join the team and help the cause. The relay is a super fun event. It's not just walking for a day. It's a huge camping event with activities, bands, entertainment, food, and general merriment for the entire time.
